Understanding Micro OLED: Key Features and Advantages

Micro OLED

Micro OLED, also known as OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon), is a novel display technology that integrates semiconductor manufacturing processes with OLED technology. Below is a detailed overview:

Definition and Basic Principle

Micro OLED is a display technology that fabricates OLED devices on monocrystalline silicon wafers as substrates. Its driving backplane is manufactured using standard CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) processes to form pixel circuits, row/column driving circuits, etc. A patterned metal layer is deposited on top of the CMOS circuit to serve as the anode of the OLED device. Subsequently, a complete OLED device structure—including hole injection layer, hole transport layer, emissive layer, and other functional layers—is fabricated on the anode, followed by the final encapsulation process.

Performance Characteristics

  1. Ultra-High Pixel DensityLeveraging silicon-based manufacturing processes, Micro OLED supports submicron-level pixels (<10μm), with a pixel density ranging from 3000 to 10000 PPI (Pixels Per Inch). This enables it to achieve 4K or even higher resolutions on a panel as small as a postage stamp.
  2. Self-Emissive and High BrightnessIt inherits the self-emissive property of traditional OLEDs, boasting high brightness levels—typically above 1500 nits, with premium products capable of reaching up to 7000 nits.
  3. Ultra-Fast Response SpeedWith a response time measured in microseconds (μs), Micro OLED eliminates motion blur and ghosting in dynamic images, ensuring smooth visual performance.
  4. Infinite Contrast RatioIt delivers theoretically infinite contrast ratio, rendering deep, true blacks and vivid, saturated colors by completely turning off black pixels.
  5. Low Power ConsumptionMicro OLED consumes approximately 20% less power than LCDs. Notably, it consumes zero power when displaying pure black content, as the corresponding pixels are fully deactivated.

Comparison with Other Display Technologies

In the field of AR/VR micro-displays, Micro OLED outperforms competing technologies such as Fast-LCD, LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon), and Micro-LED in terms of fast response speed, high resolution, and superior contrast ratio. While Micro-LED offers higher brightness, it is currently limited to monochromatic applications; full-color Micro-LED remains far from mass production. For this reason, Micro OLED is recognized as the preferred display solution for high-end AR/VR headsets both now and in the foreseeable future.

Application Fields

  1. AR/VR DevicesIt is widely adopted in AR glasses (e.g., Nreal Air, Rokid Air, DJI Goggles 2) and VR headsets (e.g., GOOVIS VR, PS VR2), delivering highly immersive visual experiences for users.
  2. Electronic Viewfinders (EVFs)Used in cameras, camcorders, and other imaging equipment to provide photographers and videographers with clear, high-fidelity framing previews.
  3. Other Near-Eye Display DevicesApplied in smart glasses, head-mounted displays (HMDs), and similar products to meet the demand for high-presence visual interaction scenarios.

Market Outlook

Driven by the rapid development of the AR/VR industry and the increasing penetration of Micro OLED technology, its market scale is experiencing robust growth. According to statistics from CINNO Research, the global market size of AR/VR silicon-based OLED display panels reached approximately USD 64 million in 2021, and is projected to surge to USD 1.47 billion by 2025, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 119% from 2021 to 2025.
