Quick Tip #3: Preserving Legacy Is Challenging
It’s clear that Type-C connectors and cables should be able to replace most traditional serial interfaces, from PCIe to HDMI. It will even replace all previous versions of USB connectors and power adapters.

However, transitioning to an all-Type-C world will take time. In the meantime, embedded designers must convert one signal type to another. For example, PCI Express within a system will need conversion to run over Type-C, potentially alongside USB 3.0 or 3.1. DisplayPort, HDMI, SATA, and others will similarly require conversion. Most of these conversions occur between the source and target systems.

Figure 9 shows a block diagram illustrating how multiple standards and connector types combine within a single system. This example depicts a digital monitor using Pericom devices to convert Type-C to DisplayPort and USB 3.0: the PI3USB30532 separates DP and USB 3.0, the PI3EQX7742AI provides USB 3.0 re-driver functionality, PI3WVR12412/PI3VDP12412 for DP multiplexing, PI3DBS3224 for USB 2.0 cross-switching functionality, and PI3PCIE3242 for USB 3.0 cross-switching functionality in a USB 3.0 hub.
