Operations and maintenance intelligent entities and digital twins to define autonomous wireless networks;

With the continuous development of wireless networks, traditional networks face operational and management challenges such as complex parameters, difficult fault localization, and heavy reliance on manual experience. Meanwhile, as AI technology advances, self-driving networks—capable of automatic fault detection and round-the-clock dynamic optimization—have become the industry mainstream. Looking ahead, with the implementation of large AI models, technologies like operation and maintenance (O&M) agents and digital twins are expected to deeply integrate with self-driving wireless networks, enabling a leapfrog upgrade in wireless network O&M.

For instance, China Unicom Beijing, in collaboration with Huawei, has achieved a comprehensive transformation of network operation intelligence through AI technology, innovatively launching a high-speed rail digital twin system. This system enhances perception accuracy from line grid-level to second-by-second insights for each vehicle and user, achieving 100% dynamic visibility of passengers’ services throughout their journey. This has significantly improved the operational efficiency and service quality of 5G-A networks.

In the future, self-driving wireless networks fully integrated with AI will become a powerful tool for operators to reduce operational costs and improve network O&M efficiency. O&M agents combined with RAN (Radio Access Network) digital twin systems will serve as the key technical path for self-driving wireless networks. O&M agents may include burst support agents, energy-saving agents, and orchestration agents, helping operators establish end-to-end unmanned automatic O&M systems. RAN digital twin systems will accurately describe network conditions in time and space through high-precision positioning, and use graph neural networks to simulate network behavior, enabling highly intelligent decision-making for network operations.

Self-driving wireless networks will greatly reduce operators’ O&M costs while enabling new business models, providing support for operators to expand their business territory in the AI era.
