Next, domestic smartphone brands are set to make significant moves in the foldable screen segment. Honor and vivo are both launching new foldable screen models, each with their own unique features. As the industry leader, Samsung also seems unwilling to lag behind, The latest model, the Galaxy Z Fold7, is scheduled for release on July 9, and the release time has also been carefully chosen, set for 10:00 AM local time in New York on July 9 (10:00 PM Beijing time). While it won’t require staying up late to watch, compared to Apple’s keynote, it remains to be seen how many people in China will tune in for Samsung’s event.
However, based on leaked information, Samsung has indeed put a lot of effort into the design of the Galaxy Z Fold7. At least the overall thickness has been significantly reduced. Compared to the Z Fold6’s astonishing 12.1mm thickness, the Z Fold7’s thickness will be significantly reduced to around 9mm. This marks a significant upgrade from the Z Fold6’s much-mocked “brick-like” feel, making it the thinnest foldable smartphone in the world. Some people feel this is more in line with Samsung’s design capabilities, as such a significant difference in thickness between generations is indeed rare.
In addition to its unprecedented thinness, the Z Fold7 was originally expected to feature an under-display camera, which would have made the inner screen look more aesthetically pleasing. After all, the Z Fold6 also had an under-display camera, so it was natural to assume that the Z Fold7, as the next-generation model, would not be without it. However, recent leaked renderings of the Z Fold7 show that the inner screen uses a single punch-hole design, suggesting that the under-display camera is likely to be scrapped. As for why the under-display camera, which has been used since the Z Fold3, is no longer present in the Z Fold7, I personally believe it may be due to insufficient imaging capabilities.
Many users have reported that the 10-megapixel camera on the Z Fold6’s outer screen performs well for selfies, but the inner screen only uses a 4-megapixel camera. You didn’t misread that—it’s 4 megapixels, not 40 megapixels. In this day and age, that’s simply unimaginable. There have been numerous reports online about the poor selfie quality of the Z Fold6’s inner screen, which is completely inconsistent with the product’s positioning and price point. A change is inevitable.
In terms of imaging, aside from an upgrade to the inner screen camera, the Z Fold7’s other imaging specifications are unlikely to differ significantly from the Z Fold6. Aside from its unprecedented thinness, the Z Fold7’s inner and outer screens will also be unprecedentedly large, with the outer screen reaching an impressive 6.5 inches. Additionally, AI is likely to be a key focus of upgrades for the Z Fold7. However, don’t expect too much in terms of battery life. The battery capacity is unlikely to exceed 5,000mAh, as the Z Fold6 only has 4,400mAh.
However, there are some advantages. For instance, Samsung has an edge over competitors in high-end displays, and its hinge technology is also quite robust. These two aspects are crucial factors in determining the quality of a foldable smartphone. Combined with the use of the Snapdragon 8 Ultra custom edition chip, the overall performance can be trusted. Additionally, the S Pen stylus is likely to be omitted, which may be a key factor in achieving the thinner design. To be honest, it’s not surprising that Samsung would abandon the S Pen on its phones, as gestures can already accomplish most tasks, making the stylus feel redundant.
As for whether it can compete with Chinese foldable phones, I believe it can hold its own. What do you all think?
